Hanged by the Neck

We started the week off with stories from the great Black Magic series, and now we switch to a tale of staged magic… and yes folks, this one guarantees to leave you hanging!

UPDATE: Kenneth Landgraf writes in: "Steve -Hanged by the NECK is penciled by Reed Crandall- he didn't ink it ... it may be the guy who inked him on some of the Buster Brown comic books he drew. best, KEN"
From the July 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #9

The splash page is again excellent, though I admit to being disappointed that Rondo was never assaulted by a pack of hanging skeletons! That's false advertising!

The story itself is just okay--but what really makes it sing (or swing?) for me are Rondo's wild facial expressions on EVERY SINGLE PAGE. The sequence from the bottom of page 4 all the way through page 5 had me nearly guffawing--those huge popping eyes, that fox-like nose, that expressively pointed beard! Majestic!

Great, now I have to grow a Vandyck.

THE SPLASH IS TYPICALLY MISLEADING BUT IT THINK THIS IS STILL A PRETTY COOL TALE. I LIKE WHEN SHE FINDS THE CLOTHES THAT REEK OF THE GRAVE! PU!

Totally... he's like a villain right out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

>I LIKE WHEN SHE FINDS THE CLOTHES THAT REEK OF THE GRAVE! PU!

Quick! Return them to The Dirty Clothes Hamper of the Dead!

I love the splash. Any idea who the artist is on this one?

Maybe Reed Crandall again, he supposedly did 2 of the stories in this issue, the other being The Corpse That Came To Dinner (posted back in August), you can compare here:
